July 6, 2020 Update

I hope everyone's holiday was great.  We were able to spend some time with family both locally and on a quick trip Sunday to and from Vernal.  On Friday, my wife and I watched Hamilton on Disney+.  Not sure we will keep it beyond the current month subscription, but for a history buff and a Broadway show fan, it was a great experience.  And it was great to have a few days - except for spending 3 hours on Thursday catching up in the office with no one else here and no phones ringing - away from the pressures of work.

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Utah:  25,469 cases; 1,604 hospitalizations; 190 deaths
Utah County:  4,648 cases; 238 hospitalizations; 23 deaths

NEWS YOU CAN USE

  • If you follow soccer, the Utah Royals won their first game of 2020, 1-0, over Sky Blue.
  • Due to budget cuts related to COVID-19, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality cannot fund the teams that used to warn people about algal blooms, so if you visit Utah Lake, be on the lookout and stay away. Algal blooms appear bright green, like an oily sheen on the water. They can develop in a few hours, and move.
  • According to Utah Fire Info, there are nine active wildfires burning in the Beehive State. Three of them started on Independence Day, and one of those three is confirmed to have been human-caused. For an update on each of the fires check out this article.

FUN STUFF

So, I mentioned Hamilton earlier. What a fun 2 hours and 45 minutes!  I studied American History as my undergraduate degree and did my senior research paper of several aspects of the American Revolution and Alexander Hamilton played a role there and an outsized role in the Constitutional debate.  It was fun to see many who were not as exposed to that part of history as I was learn more about this extraordinary yet conflicted leader.

And, you can't help but love the music.  Some of you know I love The Roots, and this little video with The Roots and the Broadway cast of Hamilton combining on a cover of Helpless was a lot of fun.  And for the few souls who may not have heard the Hamilton soundtrack, this is a good introduction to one of the more iconic songs from the musical.

Have a great rest of your day!  Tomorrow is a city council day for many of us, so we will see you on the flip side!
