May 4, 2021 Update

Today has been a city council day, and they are continuing implementation of the "hybrid" meeting model where some councilors are in the chambers and some are attending via Zoom.  This has been my first council meeting back in the chambers in person, and it has been kind of surreal.  It is starting to feel like we are somewhat back to normal.

I was also moved by one of the social media posts we included in today's update recognizing Dave Henson, who retired from the City about 20 years ago and was tragically killed in St. George by a distracted driver while walking with his wife Leslee.  Dave and Leslee were neighbors for a short time and we were so happy to get to know them when we moved to Provo.  What a nice tribute to Dave and Leslee!  Thanks, Energy team, for the idea.

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Nationally, the CDC reports 32,267,958 cases with 574,679 fatalities.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

  • Utah is now home to the nation's only commercial wool testing laboratory — Wasatch Wool Laboratories in Midvale. Wool is naturally environmentally friendly, and Utah is the fourth-largest producer of wool in the nation.
  • The Utah Army National Guard promoted its first woman, Col. Charlene Dalto, to the rank of brigadier general.
  • A 240-pound fish, age 100, was caught in the Detroit River over the weekend.
  • State and local health orders related to the pandemic expired today based on the criteria set up in the state legislature "endgame" bill.  The major limit remaining is the mask mandate in K-12 schools through this school year.  Private property owners can still require masks and social distancing at their discretion.

FUN STUFF

So, I was trying resist saying something about Star Wars Day, but after seeing this video link that someone suggested, I gave up trying to resist.  "Resistance is futile" (I know - a Star Trek reference - whatever) with something this fun.  :)

May the Fourth be with you!
