May 7, 2020 Update

Greetings, all.  I am actually working a half day in the office today and spending the afternoon socially distancing at home.  Today, we had our regular steering committee meeting on the City Center construction project and we had an opportunity to tour the current earth work going on at the site.  Excellent progress being made, even though I was covered in dust when we got done.

Coronavirus Statistics

U.S. – 1,193,813 cases with 70,802 fatalities
Utah – 5,724 cases; 476 hospitalizations; 61 fatalities
Utah County – 1,219 cases; 68 hospitalizations, 11 fatalities

Provo News You Can Use

• Unemployment claims in Utah are down this week.  Just over 9,000 people filed for unemployment this week, down from 11,800 the week before.  Just over 107,700 Utahns have filed since the pandemic began. 
• The State of Utah announced a new program for small business to assist with their rental payments on their commercial locations during the pandemic.  Check out their site to learn more.  Applications can be submitted beginning May 11.  
• Quite a few employees have asked about reopening the small fitness center here at the City Center.  It will be deep cleaned and disinfected on Sunday, May 10 and will be open again on Monday, May 11.  Please follow social distancing rules and clean up equipment when you are done as directed by signage in the facility.  Thanks to Facility Services for making it possible for employees to use the facility again.

The Mayor's Day

Today, Mayor Kaufusi:

• Met with the Chair and Vice Chair of the Municipal Council
• Met with the City Center project steering committee
• Met on potential private funding for a portion of the Airport Terminal project
• Met with Development Services Director Bill Peperone
• Participated in a meeting of Utah County mayors responding to the pandemic
