December 16 2020 Update

Hope everyone's day is going well.  Things have been busy today - as I'm sure they are for you as well.  But we have had some great meetings and I am still very optimistic about Provo and our future.  So keep hanging in there - despite the pandemic, there are lots of good things happening!

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Nationally, the CDC reports 16,519,668 cases with 302,992 fatalities.

Utah:  240,715 cases (up 2,928 from yesterday); 9,692 hospitalizations; 1,096 deaths (up 19 from yesterday)

Utah County:  58,955 cases (up 569 from yesterday); 1,655 hospitalizations; 186 deaths (up 19 from yesterday)

NEWS YOU CAN USE

• During the pandemic, millions of people moved out of New York City, resulting in a loss of roughly $34 billion. Surprisingly, this was not because no one moved into the city, but it is related to the average income of the individuals who replaced those who left. 
• Several technology companies including Snap Inc, Pinterest, Dropbox and eBay announced a coalition on Tuesday that would advocate the benefits of Section 230, a decades-old law protecting internet firms. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects tech companies from liability over content posted by users, and has been under attack from U.S. President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers. They have criticized internet platforms’ content moderation decisions and accused them of stifling conservative voices.
• Smith's Food and Drug stores in Utah are in line to administer the COVID-19 vaccine once it becomes widely available. Kroger, Smith's parent company, announced Tuesday it will partner with state health departments and the federal government to provide the vaccine to residents in Utah and across the nation.

• Participated in a meeting with Google Fiber
• Held a meeting on water rights
• Participated in the Utah League of Cities and Towns (ULCT) small group strategy meeting
• Met on the new airport terminal
• Participated in a City Hall redevelopment proposal discussion
• Held a meeting on central corridor transit
