March 29 2021 Update

Happy Monday.  As you can probably tell from the hour, my day has been kind of slammed with meetings.  I have often commented to mayors during my time here that because our employees are so good, solvable problems always get solved without us even being aware.  The impossible, unsolvable problems are the ones that find their way to the Mayor's Office.  Today has seen a few of those problems be a part of our meeting schedule today!

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Nationally, the CDC reports 30,085,827 cases with 546,704 fatalities.
Utah:  384,756 cases; 15,474 hospitalizations; 2,114 deaths
Utah County:  92,807 cases; 2,518 hospitalizations; 364 deaths

NEWS YOU CAN USE

  • One of Provo's startups, Yoodlize, is expanding after its successful pilot run in Utah County.
  • The Feed Utah drive by Community Action Food Bank was able to collect 244,297 pounds of food in Utah County alone. That is a 209% increase from the average donations.
  • The ship that has been stuck in the Suez Canal is finally freed! With the ship being stuck for six days, they are predicting weeks of delays.

THE MAYOR'S DAY

Today, Mayor Kaufusi:

  • Met with the Police Chief
  • Held a meeting with Mayor's office staff
  • Met for a communications strategy meeting
  • Participated in the ULCT Board of Directors meeting
  • Met with the City PIO
  • Held a meeting with the Deputy Mayor
  • Participated in a Utah County Covid-19 coordinating phone call
  • Met with her executive team
  • Participated in a meeting on properties in Provo
  • Held a meeting with representatives from the county commission
  • Met with new city employees

FUN STUFF

Someone clever has made a program where you can insert the ship that blocked the Suez Canal anywhere on the map. Here are a few pictures of it "blocking" some other locations you might recognize.  The first three were actually done by the Provo GIS team (kudos to Phil, Stan and the gang); the others were done my our staff this afternoon.

Thanks - and have a great rest of your day!
