April 20, 2021 Update

So, today has been a great day at my conference in St. George. We had a couple of very interesting sessions - one was on building a positive workplace culture and another on how to address ethical challenges that we confront in our “fishbowl” world.  Add to that a City Council meeting today (the first hybrid meeting in a year with some councilors, the Mayor, and staff in person and others remote), it has made it a busy day.  

I have had some questions from employees about potential unrest in Provo with the verdict announced today from the court dealing with the criminal case in the death of George Floyd. We are following all of the developments on the issue, and we will keep you up to speed on any significant issues we anticipate in Provo. 

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Nationally, the CDC reports 31,484,148 cases with 564,292 fatalities.

Utah: 393,272 cases (up 315 from yesterday); 15,959 hospitalizations; 2,174 deaths (up 8 from yesterday)

Utah County:  94,401 cases (up 78 from yesterday); 2,574 hospitalizations; 373 deaths (up 1 from yesterday)

NEWS YOU CAN USE

• The 2021 United Utah party State Organizing Convention will be taking place on April 24, 2021 from 10am - 12pm.  This is the first of several political conventions that we will see in the next few weeks.
• The murder case against former Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd went to the jury yesterday.
• Matthew McConaughey may be a viable candidate for Texas governor; poll shows the actor ahead of Governor Abbott.
