Tuesday October 5 2021 Update

The first rainy day we have had in Portland today!  I kind of expected it, but the weather has been spectacular up until today, and the forecast is for only rain today until we leave on Thursday, so life is good.  

So yesterday was a great day at the conference.  Our keynoter was a woman named Clair Haidar, who is a well-known entrepreneur and business thinker.  She talked about the changing nature of work (and not just as the result of the pandemic) and how changing work patterns have led to more stress in life.  Her research suggested that we constantly live in a "time deficit" of about 10 days of time each month - which may not be a surprise to you.  Her argument is that we need to work to figure out how to make work more efficient so employers can help close the time deficit.  Lots to think about for sure.

I also attended a session yesterday on domestic extremism and terrorism.  It was fascinating to see how domestic extremism (on both sides of the political spectrum) gets started and some of the warning signs of radicalization.  Last year, we had some experience in Provo with domestic extremism, and we learned a lot about how to talk with and work with people at both ends of the spectrum who want to challenge social norms and create intimidation for government workers.
