Wednesday October 6 2021 Update

So, we had an awesome day yesterday.  Let me start at the end of the day.  There was a networking event at the local MLS stadium, and among the activities was a funny photo booth with two alpacas.  The picture below is of me and Julie standing next to some very fancy animals.

The keynote address yesterday was by Leigh Gallagher, who recently wrote a book called The End of the Suburbs.  She talked about housing trends and how fewer and fewer large subdivisions with large lots and more and more dense housing.  Her argument is that the future of housing will not be either large lot subdivisions nor super high density housing.  Rather, it will be what she has called “hipsturbia” where mixed use meets the suburbs.  It was a fascinating discussion and an important trend to understand.

I also attended a session in which the group talked about attracting and retaining millennials.   I have been impressed with so many of our younger employees and the strengths they bring to the work place.  It was really interesting to talk with the participants in this session and better understand what is important to them in the world of work.  On a related note, I also participated in a round table on supporting the advancement of young professionals.

• Mayor Mendenhall has set a temporary ban on new homeless shelters in Salt Lake City.
• This election year, there are 8 cities in Utah County preparing for ranked-choice voting. It will be interesting to see how this change affects the elections.
• Two American scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for their discoveries into how the human body perceives temperature and touch, revelations that could lead to new ways of treating pain or even heart disease.
• Deer Valley Resort and the Empire Pass Master Owners Association (EPMOA) announced on Monday that the Daly-West Headframe, a major artifact of Park City’s mining history, will be raised to stand again on October 14.

This week our employee highlight is a grandpa alert from Josh Ihrig in IS:

I’m excited to now be part of the Grandpa club. My oldest daughter gave birth to a baby boy, Brantly Kade Carrigan, at 2:11 pm Saturday September 25th.  He weighed in at 6 lbs 13 oz, and is 19.75 inches long, Mother and son are doing great! My son-in-law is a nervous wreck… he’s going to be an amazing father.

FUN STUFF

Here is another music video from an iconic Provo band.  Imagine Dragons is arguably the most popular and prolific band to come out of the Provo music scene.  Among their biggest hits is this one that has become one of my personal favorites.  My daughter and one of her former college roommates and best friend have gotten together annually for a few days away, and one of their traditions is to make a music video together.  A couple of years ago they used this song as the theme of their music video.  The video here is not "their" video, but one of Imagine Dragons in concert playing "Thunder."
