August 18 2020 Update

Happy Tuesday everyone.  It is City Council day again, and our elected officials are dealing with some challenging issues.  Perhaps none is as controversial as what do to about managing the potential spread of the Coronavirus as students return to Provo from around the world to attend BYU and UVU.  These are challenging and divisive issues, but despite our feelings about them, I am impressed that our elected officials are united in making sure we balance all the competing interests to find the best solution going forward. 

CORONAVIRUS STATS

Nationally, the CDC reports 5,422,242 cases with 169,870 fatalities.

Utah: 47,157 cases (up 263 from yesterday); 2,804 hospitalizations; 369 deaths (up 5 from yesterday)

Utah County:  9,576 cases (up 98 from yesterday); 441 hospitalizations; 39 deaths (no change from yesterday)

NEWS YOU CAN USE

• For BYU football fans, the Cougars are scheduled to host Troy on Sept. 26, Houston on Oct. 16 and North Alabama on Nov. 21. BYU and Army will now also meet on Sept. 19 at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.  
• Two of Utah's own are featured on Discovery Channel's new show, "I Quit", premiering today. Marcus Sorensen, of Kaysville, and Chris Studdert, of Mapleton, founded Blue Coolers, a company based out of Orem. Both men said starting this company fulfilled their love of spending time with their families in the outdoors, as well as their desire to own and operate their own business.
• A Pleasant Grove man was charged Monday with throwing his wife into the Provo River and threatening bystanders who tried to help her. They were reportedly arguing over dinner plans.

• Met as the Utah County Covid-19 Economic Recovery Committee
• Participated in City Council Work meeting
• Attended City Council meeting
