May 3 2022 Update

There is a lot happening in Provo this week.  First, we wanted to remind you about the city employees’ sneak peak open house at the new airport terminal tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. until noon.  We hope you can join us there for a “first look” tour of the newest and brightest city facility.  Much thanks to our Public Works and Airport teams who made it all happen, and to Mayor Kaufusi, Isaac Paxman and many others who built the coalition to secure all of the funding needed.

Also, I wanted to mention that Mayor Kaufusi is speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles this week.  She is speaking on a panel with the mayors of Austin, Los Angeles, Denver, and Miami about the opportunities and challenges that confront America’s best performing cities.  Provo is in pretty good company!

Finally, we are presenting our budget this evening to the Municipal Council for the new fiscal year beginning July 1.  As indicated in an email earlier today, the budget proposal, which is subject to Council approval, recommends a 5% across the board cost of living increase for full-time city employees, market adjustments to help us stay competitive, and a variety of other budget enhancements.  After reviewing the budget highlights with the Council this afternoon, we will be sending out more information to employees tomorrow.  We really do appreciate all of the hard work that the budget process entails, and are excited to support the Council as they work through their process.

TUESDAY TIP

Why curiosity is a good response to employee criticism

Don't immediately dismiss feedback or criticism from a team member, writes Liz Kislik, who recommends being curious and asking questions to uncover problem areas you're unaware of. "Make sure you can now see more than you were first seeing on your own, even if you don't agree with or accept every data point," Kislik advises.

FUN STUFF

So - I don't spend much time on Instagram, but when Amber showed me this little video, it made me laugh out loud.  In part because this is something my college roommates and I would have definitely done!

Hope you have a great day.  We appreciate all you do!
