Monday May 9 2022 Update

First of all, thanks for all of your kind wishes to our family in light of my father in law’s passing and funeral.  The notes and cards, the flowers and plants, and the stack of sandwiches ordered for my wife’s family were much appreciated.  

Speaking of funerals, the services for our friend and former Covey Center general manager Paul Duerden will be this coming Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at 575 E 800 N in Orem.  Viewings will be Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday morning starting at 11:00 a.m., both at the same location as the funeral.  Our condolences go out to Paul’s family and his many colleagues at the Covey and in the city generally.  Paul’s obituary can be found here.

One of the ideas that came through the earlier survey was the desire to make the update more interactive. NEWS YOU CAN USE

• First Lady Dr. Jill Biden visited Ukraine and met with their first lady on Mother's Day.  
• Funeral services were held for Senator Orrin Hatch on Saturday, with comments from a wide variety of speakers including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.  
• Protests across the country on the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion on abortion continued Sunday, including a protest in Salt Lake City.  
• Provo City installed some temporary traffic control devices on Timpview Drive in partnership with Bike Walk Provo.

HOT-BUTTON ITEMS IN PROVO

I enjoyed spending Thursday evening and Friday morning at the new Provo Airport Terminal grand opening events.  It was awesome to see so many friends, colleagues and former colleagues in one place!  Thursday evening, I put 15,000 steps in giving tours to legislators, other elected officials, and those who helped so significantly with funding for the project.  Then Friday morning, I repeated the tour leading effort with another 10 groups or so.  The ribbon cutting program was awesome, along with the other events.  Hats off to Nicole Martin, Emily Guerrero and the entire public works staff, mayor’s office team, and Covey Center team who helped with all of the events.  

At the ribbon cutting, Breeze Airlines announced their new service to and from Provo, as well as their decision to base 4 aircraft in Provo.  Allegiant Air also announced an additional based aircraft in Provo (going from 4 to 5) as well as several other destinations.  By the end of the year, Breeze will be flying non-stop flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and one-stop flights to San Bernardino and White Plains, NY.  Allegiant destinations will include current locations in Austin, Houston, Mesa, Phoenix, Tampa, and Orange County with four new destinations by the end of the year to Portland, Las Vegas, San Diego and Orlando.  

FUN STUFF

I don’t know about you, but sometimes our digital assistants like Siri and Alexa make me a bit nervous.  This little Studio C sketch finds out what might happen if Alexa was called to testify in a court case.
